CHAPTER TEN

I stood at the sliding glass door at the balcony of Pamela's apartment and looked at the pool area below for what seemed like a week. It couldn't have been very long, though, because I had barely finished my second Heineken when Susan appeared. Even from eight floors above, her blue and yellow bathing suit was quite an eyeful. I watched her maneuver her way around the lounge chairs, with Zarrillo in tow, before she picked a spot that she knew would be within full view of Pamela's apartment. Smart girl. "There she is."

"Where?" Max had come up behind me.

"Right there." I pointed out where she was sitting.

Max nodded. "They look pretty settled."

"Yes, they do."

Max watched a while longer, then said, "I don't think they're going anywhere. If I were Zarrillo, I sure as hell wouldn't be."

I tried to think of some witty comeback, but couldn't. I put my empty Heineken bottle down on a nearby glass table. "We need to get going."

"Okay."

"I think it's best if Pamela stays right here. We should use her as a lookout."

"How?" Max was visibly displeased with my suggestion that his new-found love interest stay behind.

"How? What kind of question is that? A lookout is someone who looks out." I tapped my finger on the sliding glass door. I was getting a little testy with Max because of what I supposed was petty jealousy on my part – his life was coming up roses, while my life seemed perpetually overgrown with poisoned weeds. Still, it felt so good getting my back up that I pushed aside any thoughts of apologizing. I turned to Pamela instead. "Just keep an eye on them. If they go anywhere other than into the pool, come up and get us. You've got only two floors to go, they've got to come up ten flights, plus Susan will undoubtedly be stalling him as long as she can. That should be more than enough time for you to beat them."

"I hope so," Pamela said. She sounded a little nervous. "But maybe I'd do better trying to head them off at the elevator? Susan's supposed to be my friend from New York, so if I ran into them we could talk. That'll look natural enough, and give even more time for you people to get out of his apartment."

"Yeah." Max took a step closer to Pamela. I could tell from his voice that he knew enough to be gentle with me. "Tell you what," he said, "I'll get Zarrillo's door open for you, then I'll come back here. If him and Susan leave the pool area, Pamela and me will both do something – I'll get you, she'll cut them off at the elevator. We do it like that, we got it covered both ways."

Max was indeed being gentle and, besides, I could tell that the negotiations on the assignment for Pamela Nichols might go on until the sun went down – maybe even until the new ice age began – if I didn't give in soon.
